Historic Achievement Underscores the Critical Need for Black Leadership in the Future of AI
Nationwide — Dr. Calvin D. Lawrence, a trailblazing AI ethicist, engineer, and bestselling author, has made history as one of the first Black Americans to earn a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence. This groundbreaking accomplishment not only solidifies his place among the world’s top AI experts but also represents a powerful stride forward in Black representation within the most influential field of our time.
Dr. Lawrence’s journey in artificial intelligence began in the 1990s when he earned his master’s degree in AI while on a prestigious fellowship with NASA. Long before AI became a buzzword, he was already working at the intersection of advanced technology and applied science—decades ahead of the curve.
A former member of IBM’s prestigious Global AI Ethics Board, Dr. Lawrence served as the company’s only client-facing Black engineer in its AI division. In that role, he shaped enterprise-wide strategies on responsible AI, working directly with Fortune 500 companies and government leaders to implement ethical AI systems that protect vulnerable communities.
Dr. Lawrence is uniquely positioned in the AI field—not just as a scholar and ethicist, but as a hands-on engineer who has designed and helped deploy real-world AI solutions for some of the world’s largest and most complex enterprises.
His doctoral research culminated in a powerful dissertation titled “Unveiling AI Bias in the Judicial System and Policing: A Critical Examination of Systemic Racism in Law Enforcement.” His scholarship confronts the disproportionate impact of AI technologies like predictive policing and facial recognition on Black and Brown communities, while proposing innovative frameworks for transparency, fairness, and accountability in machine learning systems.
“Artificial Intelligence is becoming the invisible hand behind so many decisions that affect our lives—often without our awareness or consent,” said Dr. Lawrence. “It’s not enough to be included. Black technologists must lead the development of AI with justice, integrity, and lived experience at the center.”
Dr. Lawrence is the founder of IntegrityFirst.AI, a consulting and compliance platform ensuring ethical AI design and deployment across industries. He is also the founder of AI 4 Black Kids, a global nonprofit educating middle school students of color on AI through culturally relevant, hands-on learning. His bestselling book, Hidden in White Sight: How AI Empowers and Deepens Systemic Racism, is widely regarded as a critical resource for understanding how bias is encoded into modern technology.
In addition to his academic and industry accomplishments, Dr. Lawrence is the host of the upcoming podcast “AI Unhinged: What They Ain’t Telling You” — a provocative and unfiltered series that explores how AI is reshaping society, who it serves, and who it harms. The show will feature guests from Silicon Valley to the streets, lifting the veil on AI’s real-world impact on communities of color.
Dr. Lawrence’s media presence spans CNN, C-SPAN, Good Morning America, and TEDx stages. His work continues to inspire a new generation of ethical technologists and advocates for systemic change in AI.
